On the 4th of February, World Cancer Day is an international day intended to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. World Cancer Day is led by the Union for International Cancer Control to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration.
To honour this extremely important subject, we wanted to take this opportunity to shed some light on cancer research in Ireland and shout out some great local charities.
Almost 43,500 people in Ireland get cancer each year. This figure is comprised of both invasive and non-invasive tumours, as well as non-melanoma skin cancers. It is estimated that more than 24,000 invasive cases (13,027 men, 11,299 women) will be diagnosed. This excludes non-melanoma skin cancers. The good news is that more people are surviving cancer than ever before, largely thanks to cancer research expansion and fantastic charities.
The Irish Cancer Society is a community of patients, survivors, volunteers, supporters, health and social care professionals and researchers. Together we are transforming the experiences and outcomes of people affected by cancer through our advocacy, support services and research. Daffodil Day is the Irish Cancer Society’s biggest fundraiser, taking place each year in March and raising millions of Euro to support cancer patients and their loved ones by providing free advice and support, as well as by funding lifesaving cancer research. Childhood Cancer Ireland is a charity founded by and led by parents of children with cancer and survivors. As a parent and survivor-led charity, we understand that a diagnosis of childhood cancer has a devastating impact on the entire family. We help to ease the burden of diagnosis and treatment on children and their families by raising funds to provide practical and emotional supports. We also advocate for better supports and services for families, as well as better treatments and outcomes for children, adolescents and young adults. Find out more here.
The Marie Keating Foundation is one of the leading voices in Ireland for cancer prevention, awareness and support. We are committed to being there for people diagnosed with cancer, and their families at every step of this cancer journey, and our services reflect that. Through our information and support services, we reach thousands of people a year, giving education, information and advice focused on cancer prevention and early detection, as well as providing support services and financial assistance to those living with and beyond cancer. Breast Cancer Ireland is a registered charity, established to raise significant funding to support pioneering research programmes nationally, as well as to promote education and awareness on the importance of good breast health amongst women of all ages. Find out more here.
