Frequently asked questions: Uploading photos

Which upload is right for you?

We offer two web upload options, Express Upload and Basic Upload, as well as our PictureMover software, mobile phone uploading, and email uploading.
  • Express Upload (PC and some Macs):
Our fastest and easiest upload tool, perfect for uploading multiple photos at once. No download is required if you have Adobe Flash installed, and you can order prints or share your photos while they are uploading. All photos must be in JPEG file format. You can also upload a zipped file of JPEG files. Please note that this method is not recommended for PowerPC Mac users at this time. Instead we recommend zipping your jpeg files and uploading them using the basic upload method.

  • Basic Upload (PC or Mac):
Our basic upload tool, best for slower internet connections. It can also be used to upload photos one at a time. Photos must be in JPEG file format. You can also upload a zipped file of JPEG files.

  • PictureMover (PC only):
Free, downloadable software for your PC that moves photos off your camera to your computer and directly into your Snapfish account. Once you have installed PictureMover, every time you plug in your camera or insert a CD or memory card into your computer, PictureMover will automatically detect and move your photos into your Snapfish account. Great for uploading hundreds of photos at a time. Requires Windows XP Learn more.

  • Mobile phone:
Send photos from your mobile phone to your Snapfish account. While viewing photos, access your options menu on your phone and click 'send'. Learn more.

  • From email:
Email photos to us and we will add them to your account. Learn more.

    • If don't have any albums or want to create a new one, click the button next to "Upload to a new album." Then, add an optional album title. Click "Edit album details" if you'd like to edit the album date or add a description.
    • If you're uploading to an existing album, click the button next to "Upload to an existing album." Use the menu options to find the album, and then click the cover photo to select the album.
  4. If you want, you can edit your upload settings. Click the arrow next to "Upload settings" to customise your preferences. Then, click the "Select photos" button to continue.
NOTE: If you're creating large prints or gifts with your photos, we recommend using Large Print Upload for the best results. See ourrecommended resolutions page for more details.

Frequently asked questions: Uploading photos

What is the best resolution for my photos?
Please visit ourphoto resolution page.

How long does it take to upload photos to Snapfish?
The speed of your upload depends on the speed of your Internet connection. If you have a 56k modem, it will take approximately 2 minutes to upload a 500k digital photo file. The faster your Internet connection, the less time it will take to upload your photos.

Is there any charge for uploading?
No. Uploading and sharing your digital photos is free!

What type of photo file can I upload to my Snapfish account?
To upload multiple photos on a PC, you can use the following file types:
  • JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg, .jpe)
  • Zip file (containing JPEGS only)
To upload photos on a Mac, you can use the following file types:
  • JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg, .jpe)
To upload photos one-by-one, you can use the following file types:
  • JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg, .jpe)
  • Zip file (containing JPEGS only)
Any digital photo you upload must have an ending that matches one of the above file types (e.g., SummerPicnic.jpg). Whichever type of file you use, the copy you upload will be converted to JPEG format before it is added to your account.

NOTE: Whenever you upload to Snapfish, only a copy is actually placed in your account. Your original digital photo remains unchanged on your computer.

Why can't I see file extensions on my photo files?
If the names of your files do not end with a dot and a three- or four-letter extension (.jpg, .zip, etc.), your computer may be set to hide file extensions at the end of file names. This setting is easy to change:

On a PC with Windows NT:
  1. From your computer desktop, click 'Start' and select 'Control Panel' from the menu on the right.
  2. Double click 'Folder Options'.
  3. Click on the 'View' tab at the top of the window.
  4. Uncheck the box labeled 'Hide extensions for known file types' and click on the 'OK' button to confirm your change.
  5. You should now see the file extensions at the end of all file names.
NOTE: These steps may vary slightly if you have an older Windows operating system.

On a Mac:
  1. Click on the 'Finder' drop-down menu at the top of your browser window.
  2. Select 'Preferences'.
  3. In the next window, select the 'Advanced' icon.
  4. Check the box next to 'Show all file extensions'.
NOTE: These steps may vary slightly if you have an older Mac operating system.

How long are my photos stored on Snapfish?
Your photos will remain in your Snapfish online account indefinitely, as long as you remain an active member of the service. Active participation in the service is defined as purchasing photo merchandise (prints, enlargements, or any photo gift) through the website at least once every 365 days.
